Software and hardware requirements

  1. PC with Intel® Core™/Pentium®/Celeron®/Xeon™, AMD K6/AMD Opteron/AMD Phenom/Turion™/Athlon™/Duron™/Sempron™ or compatible processor (1 GHz or higher)
  2. Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® 7, Microsoft® Windows® Vista, Microsoft® Windows® Server 2008, Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003, Windows XP.
    To work with localized interfaces, corresponding language support is required.
  3. Memory: 512 MB RAM
    In a multiprocessor system, an additional 256 MB of RAM is required for each additional processor.
  4. Hard disk space: 650 MB for typical program installation and 650 MB for program operation
  5. Video card and monitor (min. resolution 1024×768)
  6. Keyboard, mouse or other pointing device

Note: To be able to open PDF files or images from Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook documents, you need to have the corresponding Microsoft Office application installed on your system.

Installing ABBYY FineReader 10 on a stand-alone computer

The installation program will guide you through the installation process. Please close all the applications prior to installing ABBYY FineReader.

To install ABBYY FineReader:

  1. Insert the ABBYY FineReader 10 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The installation program will be launched automatically.
    Tip: If the installation program is not launched automatically, double-click the Setup.exe file located on the ABBYY FineReader 10 CD-ROM.
  2. Follow the installation instructions.

Note: If you wish to retain your user patterns created in an earlier version of ABBYY FineReader, do not remove the earlier version of the program prior to installing the new version. All the existing user patterns will then be available for use in the new version.

Installing ABBYY FineReader 10 on a LAN server and workstations

Installation of ABBYY FineReader 10 Corporate Edition (ABBYY FineReader 10 Site License Edition) on a network server can only be carried out by the system administrator. The installation consists of two stages. First, the program is installed on the server. From the server, the program can be installed on workstations using one of the four methods:

Starting ABBYY FineReader 10

To start ABBYY FineReader 10, do one of the following: 

Note: Make sure your scanner is connected to your computer, plugged in, and turned on before you start ABBYY FineReader. To install a scanner after installing the program, please consult the user guide supplied with the scanner for instructions.

If you do not have a scanner, you can still recognize image files using ABBYY FineReader 10. Sample image files can be found in the Demo subfolder located in the folder where ABBYY FineReader was installed.

User dictionaries created in previous versions of ABBYY FineReader

To use user dictionaries created in ABBYY FineReader 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 or 9.0 in ABBYY FineReader 10:

  1. Remove ABBYY FineReader 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 or 9.0 from your computer.
  2. Install ABBYY FineReader 10.
  3. Run ABBYY FineReader 10 (select Start>Programs>ABBYY FineReader 10).
  4. On the Tools menu, select the View Dictionaries... command.
  5. In the Select Dictionary dialog box that opens, select the dictionary you need and click the View... button.
  6. In the dialog box that opens, click the Import... button.
    The dictionaries that you can import into ABBYY FineReader 10 have the .pmd extension and are located in the Languages subfolder in the folder where the previous version of ABBYY FineReader was installed. Select the dictionary you need and click the Open button.

You can also use user dictionaries created in ABBYY FineReader 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 or 9.0 without removing the earlier version:

  1. Run ABBYY FineReader 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 or 9.0.
  2. Open the Options dialog box (Tools>Options...) and click the Check Spelling tab.
  3. Click the View Dictionaries button.
  4. In the Select Dictionary dialog box that opens, select the dictionary you need and click the View... button.
  5. In the dialog box that opens, click the Export... button and save the dictionary as Portable Morphological Dictionary.
  6. Install ABBYY FineReader 10.
  7. Start ABBYY FineReader 10  (select Start>Programs>ABBYY FineReader 10).
  8. On the Tools menu, select the View dictionaries... command.
  9. In the Select Dictionary dialog box that opens, select the dictionary you need and click the View... button.
  10. In the dialog box that opens, click the Import... button and enter the path to your saved dictionaries. Select the dictionary you need and click the Open button.

User patterns created in previous versions of ABBYY FineReader

User patterns created in ABBYY FineReader 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 or 9.0 can be used in ABBYY FineReader 10:

Integration with Microsoft Office

When integrating ABBYY FineReader with Microsoft Office applications, check the security settings of these applications (Tools>Macro>Security...).

For the correct integration of ABBYY FineReader with Microsoft Office 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2007 applications, you must select Trust all installed add-ins and templates on the Trusted Sources tab if Security Level is set to High or Medium.

Important! If you have changed the security settings, restart the corresponding Microsoft Office application.

Removing ABBYY FineReader 10

To remove ABBYY FineReader 10 from your computer:

  1. Select Start>Settings>Control Panel and double click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
    Note: In Windows Vista and Windows 7, click the Programs and Features icon.
  2. In the dialog box that opens, select ABBYY FineReader 10, click Remove, and follow the instructions of the program.

Additional information

User patterns are located in a document folder and have the .ptn extension.

User dictionaries are located  in %userprofile%\Application Data\ABBYY\FineReader\10.00\UserDictionaries and have the .ame extension.

Scantwain.txt and Scanwia.txt are stored in the user profile:
